Welcome to Five Element Equine Wellness
My name is Kerri-Ellen Chalmers, and I’m the TCM Equine Practitioner behind Five Element Equine Wellness.
I am a Registered Acupuncturist for human patients, trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and I bring this foundation into my equine wellness work through a meridian-based, whole-horse approach.
At this time, I am actively seeking to collaborate with licensed veterinarians in order to complete the required clinical supervision and training to obtain my formal equine acupuncture qualification to better serve our equine community. All equine acupuncture services will be provided within appropriate veterinary frameworks.
This space is dedicated to supporting horses through a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) lens—focusing on balance, longevity, comfort, and performance. Using the principles of the Five Elements, I work with the whole horse: body, movement, emotions, and environment.
Five Element Equine Wellness focuses on:
• TCM-based equine wellness & meridian balancing
• Musculoskeletal support & movement assessment
• Performance, recovery, and preventative care
• Supporting horses through stress, injury, aging, and transition
• Whole-horse care guided by the Five Element system
My goal is to support horses in a way that is ethical, collaborative, and rooted in both traditional knowledge and modern standards of care.
Thank you for being here and for supporting holistic equine care.

🐎 TCM Cupping for Horses – Natural Support for Performance & Comfort 🐎
Did you know cupping therapy isn’t just for people?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) cupping for horses is a gentle, non-invasive technique used to help relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, and support overall balance in the body.
✨ Benefits of Equine Cupping:
• Releases tight or sore muscles
• Improves blood & lymphatic flow
• Helps with back, neck, SI & hind-end tension
• Supports recovery after training or competition
• Encourages relaxation & freer movement
From a TCM perspective, cupping helps move Qi and Blood, clear stagnation, and open the meridians—often leading to visible relaxation like stretching, yawning, licking, and chewing.
Cupping is an excellent standalone treatment or can be combined with acupuncture, massage, and meridian balancing as part of a holistic equine wellness program.
🐴Ideal for sport horses, rehab cases, and horses showing stiffness, soreness, or performance changes.
Helping horses feel, move, and perform their best—naturally. 🐴💙

🐎Photonic Red LightTherapy for Horses🐎
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, photonic (red / near-infrared) light therapy is more than just technology — it is external Yang Qi applied directly to the body.
In TCM, pain and injury are signs of Qi and Blood stagnation. Photonic light works to:
🔴 Warm the channels
🔴 Move Qi and Blood
🔴 Break chronic stagnation
🔴 Dispel Cold from muscles, joints, and tendons
🔴 Calm the Shen (nervous system)
This makes it especially effective for:
✔️ Chronic tendon & ligament injuries
✔️ Back, SI, and neck pain
✔️ Arthritis & stiffness
✔️ Old injuries that “never quite healed”
✔️ Performance recovery & muscle fatigue
Many horses visibly relax during treatment — lowering the head, sighing, licking and chewing — a clear sign of Shen regulation and improved energy flow.
✨ Think of photonic light as a modern, smokeless form of moxibustion — precise, gentle, and deeply supportive of the meridian system.
When combined with acupuncture and bodywork, results are often deeper and longer-lasting.
🌿Supporting your horse’s healing naturally, energetically, and holistically.

🐎 TCM Gua Sha for Horses 🐎
Did you know Gua Sha isn’t just for people?
This powerful Traditional Chinese Medicine technique is also incredibly beneficial for horses of all disciplines.
✨ What is Equine Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is a gentle scraping technique used along muscles and meridians to help release tension, improve circulation, and move stagnant Qi and Blood. It works deeply into the fascia and is excellent for both performance and recovery.
💪 Benefits for your horse include:
• Relief from sore, tight muscles
• Improved range of motion
• Faster recovery after training or competition
• Support for back, neck, shoulder & hind-end tension
• Calming effect on the nervous system
• Early detection of problem areas before they become injuries
You may notice temporary red or purple marks — this is normal and shows areas of stagnation being released. These marks usually fade within a few days and are not bruises.
🐴 Ideal for jumpers, dressage horses, eventers, pleasure horses, and rehab cases.
Gua Sha pairs beautifully with equine acupuncture, massage, and meridian balancing for a truly holistic approach to equine wellness.

🔥 Moxibustion for Horses – Warmth That Heals 🐎
Have a horse that’s stiff, sore, or slow to warm up—especially in cold or damp weather? Moxibustion is a gentle Traditional Chinese Medicine technique that uses warming mugwort (moxa) over specific areas or acupuncture points to help increase circulation, ease chronic pain, dispel cold & damp, and support recovery.
✨ Benefits include:
• Improved flexibility & range of motion
• Relief from arthritis and chronic stiffness
• Better circulation and muscle relaxation
• Support for senior and performance horses
Most horses love the warmth—you’ll often see head lowering, yawning, and deep relaxation during treatment.
🔥 Ideal for: maintenance care, winter stiffness, post-competition recovery, and aging horses.
🌿 Non-invasive • Drug-free • Can be combined with other bodywork modalities

🐴TCM Equine Meridian Balancing is a holistic approach that supports a horse’s comfort, movement, and performance by restoring balance within the body’s natural energy system.🐴
🌿Traditional Chinese Medicine views the horse as an interconnected whole, where physical function, emotional state, and overall vitality are linked through a network of meridians—pathways that influence muscles, joints, organs, and circulation. When these pathways are flowing freely, the horse moves with ease and resilience. When they become restricted or overactive, discomfort, stiffness, behavioural changes, or performance limitations may arise.
How Meridian Imbalances Develop
Meridian imbalances can occur from a variety of factors, including:
🌷Training and competition demands
🌷Muscle strain or repetitive use patterns
🌷Saddle or rider imbalance
🌷Hoof or postural imbalances
🌷Injury, trauma, or compensation patterns
🌷Stress, travel, or environmental changes
🌷Age-related wear and reduced recovery capacity
Often, these imbalances show up as subtle changes in movement or attitude before obvious lameness or injury is present.
🌻What Meridian Balancing Involves
Each session begins with a thorough assessment of the horse’s posture, movement, and tissue response. Meridian pathways are evaluated through observation and gentle hands-on techniques to identify areas of restriction, weakness, or excess tension.
Treatment may include:
⭐️ Targeted point stimulation
⭐️ Meridian-based soft tissue techniques
⭐️ Myofascial release along energy pathways
⭐️ Kinesiology taping
⭐️ Warming techniques when appropriate
The focus is to support deficient pathways and calm overactive ones, encouraging the body to return to a more balanced and functional state.
☀️Commonly Addressed Areas
Meridian balancing is often helpful for:
🍎 Back, neck, and topline tension
🍎 Hip and hind-end stiffness
🍎 Uneven movement or one-sidedness
🍎 Reduced flexibility or engagement
🍎 Recovery support during training or competition
🍎 Emotional stress or behavioural tension
🍎 Benefits for the Horse
🐎 Many horses show:
✨ Improved freedom of movement
✨ Reduced muscle tension and soreness
✨ Better symmetry and coordination
✨ Increased comfort and willingness under saddle
✨ Enhanced recovery and overall resilience
Meridian balancing is effective both as preventative maintenance and as support for horses managing ongoing physical challenges.
🍀Part of a Whole-Horse Approach
TCM Equine Meridian Balancing works best alongside:
